PEERLESSLY! Truly an all-round lens at it's best. Great picture quality at all focal lengths. Super-bright, pure colors, contrasts, with soft pleasing background blur. So versatile it directly replaces several other EF lenses including fixed loop-holes, without sacrificing image quality. This is basically the following lenses together: EF 70-200 / 4 L IS, EF 300/4 L IS and the EF 400 / 5.6 L. But with equally good image quality, image stabilization fabulous and very short focus distance! Add a 1.4x extender and the dream comes true. Like closeups so get all means also an intermediate ring, it makes a big difference. This will no doubt be a highly desirable objective, which is incredibly fun to use. ADVANTAGES + A major upgrade of its predecessor, 100-400 (focusing distance, image stabilization, image quality, handling) + Relatively easy, even with extender. Allows handheld during long workouts. + Fantastic short focusing distance of 98 cm, which greatly expands the area! +++ + Very fast AF, even at 400mm + Incredibly effective IS. Handles in quiet surroundings 1/20 s of 400 mm! + Quiet IS and AF! The sound of the zoom is significantly higher than these. + Super Sharp (Pixel geeks) + Works surprisingly well with my EF 1.4x II extender which gives 140-560 / 6.3 to 8 FF: No CA, button loss of sharpness, weak AF (not tested with AI Servo than) the 5D III. + Works very well with intermediate ring. With a 31mm extension tube to get 0.5x (from 0,31x) magnification at the 100 as well as 400mm. It should, however about 15cm shorter minimum focus distance of 400mm, and one can at 100mm focus on a subject that is approximately 15cm in front of the "nose". Talk about flexible working distance! :-) + Absurdly high build quality! Read LensRentals praise: http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2015/02/canon-100-400-is-l-mk-ii-teardown-best-built-lens-ever + Optimally positioned controls. + The locking ring (for resistance, time-lapse, transportation) works perfectly. + Tripod base can easily be removed with the lens on the camera. + Gap in the hood, to adjust the pole filter. + 77mm filter thread + Focus limiter + Weather Sealed, of course! Cautions +/- Turn the zoom instead of the push-pull that old model had (matter of taste) +/- Image stabilization in three positions where the third is new, and then goes into the IS only when exposing. Have not found use for this position than when it becomes much more difficult to compose without active ICE, but it certainly fits certain situations. +/- Maximum zoomed in (400 mm) and focused at the closest focusing distance has in fact about 180 mm effective focal length. Canon writes that the maximum magnification ratio is 0.31 times. I have tested and counted. That's right! +/- Nothing "true macro lens". A moderately thick intermediate ring is recommended, see advantages above. Macro 1: 1 is required, however, the full 13 + 13 + 21 + 31mm rings of 100mm. The disadvantages are then considerably more (light tap, no electronic connectors, instability, chromatic aberration at 100mm) than the benefits. +/- Comparatively expensive? Depends on what your needs and requirements you have. DISADVANTAGES - The door in the hood opens too easily. CONCLUSION Superbly.

Amazing, love it. The only lens that sits on my camera since I got it. Has also done to take good pictures in the dark gray weather has been. Good focusing distance. A little heavy, it's the only negative. Glad that it may rain and snow, and you dare to use it anyway.

Amazing lens. Very expensive, BUT you do get stunning image quality, a very solidly built lens, super fast auto focus, and Canon's latest image stabilization technology (up to 4 stops of IS in 3 modes). I'm very happy with this lens.
